Enter the Internal Traffic Generator (ITG): A built-in feature that makes every Xsight switch its own test lab.
The ITG is a silicon‑proven design embedded in every one of Xsight’s switch devices. It enables engineers to generate, shape, and measure traffic from within the switch, eliminating the need for external traffic appliances for a large portion of the bring‑up, validation, and production tests. By making test stimulus and measurement intrinsic to the switching device (and portable across simulation, emulation, and silicon), the ITG shortens development cycles, reduces CapEx and OpEx, and enables repeatable, early, and at-scale testing.
As an example, because of the X2 ITG capabilities, our own development teams avoid purchasing dedicated traffic generators, saving millions of dollars in capital costs across development boards, while delivering testing capabilities equivalent to what would have required tens of millions of dollars in external hardware. Operationally, this also translates to meaningful energy and maintenance savings: for our own environment, eliminating around 50 high-power servers (roughly 50 kW) that would otherwise consume over $50,000 in electricity annually, not to mention reduced cooling and lab management overhead. Depending on the size of the system and the number of boards under test, organizations could see even larger CapEx and OpEx savings. And ITG seamlessly integrates with Xsight’s software ecosystem (including SONiC‑based deployments) and is available on X2 and all its platforms.

- Speed development by allowing the same test scenarios to run seamlessly across simulation, emulation, and real hardware. The same ITG‑based test scenarios can be authored once and reused across simulation, multiple emulation platforms (on‑prem and in the cloud), and first‑silicon boards, preserving intent and dramatically improving reproducibility. This cross‑platform reusability aligns with Xsight’s broader initiative of opening the X‑Switch ISA (XISA) and publishing executable examples, which can be validated with ITG early and often.
- Increase reliability through consistent, repeatable testing that reduces human error and lab variability. Because traffic originates inside the switch and can be steered per port, per flow, or across many ports, scale tests no longer demand racks of testers and cabling. The lab team can wire once and exercise many topologies and traffic matrices using the ITG alone, improving throughput of nightly regressions and reducing the risk of testbed drift.
